TEACHING BY THE STANDARDS

I use the National Academy of Science National Standards as guide for teaching. The full document on Standards can be viewed at the National Standards Web Site. The six major teaching standards and their implications in my classrooms are as follows:

                             Standard                                                                           Implication
Teachers of science plan an inquiry-based science program for their students I provide students an opportunity to ask their own questions and search for answers
Teachers of science guide and facilitate learning.  I present opportunities to learn versus an accumulation of facts
Teachers of science engage in ongoing assessment of their teaching and of student learning. I use journaling, presentations and notebooks as a way to assess continuous learning.
Teachers of science design and manage learning environments that provide students with the time, space, and resources needed for learning science. I utilize hands-on projects that recognize the concept of Multiple Intelligences
Teachers of science develop communities of science learners that reflect the intellectual rigor of scientific inquiry and the attitudes and social values conducive to science learning. My learning evironments are managed as microsoms of natural environments stressing equitable energy distribution and social justice.
Teachers of science actively participate in the ongoing planning and development of the school science program. Content in my classes is innovative.Grants and technology are used to enhance the delivery of that content. I participate locally and nationally in science teaching development.
