Making Stone Tools

For background see Caveman to Chemist and related site on tools from bottles.
our class you will be working in tribes of your choosing.

Jim Hamilton, a Knoxville resident and flint knapper for over 40 years, will give us a one-day workshop on the history of stone tools and how to make them by knapping. After reading the background information on the web sites and watching (and listening) to instruction from Jim Hamilton, each tribe will make three tools:

  1.     A knapping/flaking tool
  2.     A sharp edge tool for cutting leather
  3.     An awl for punching holes in leather
In addition, each tribe will use these tools to make a leather pouch to put them in. Note: you will also need to make a "threader" from a stick.

Remember that each tribe is expected to make and use their own tools - you're on your honor. If your tribe decides to make tools of a different nature, see me for approval. The same goes if you want to make something other than a leather pouch. The point is - make something using tools you have created from stone!
