Physical Science Assignments - Spring 2001

Tues 1/16 - Fill out info cards. Demonstrated the web site.

Wed 1/17 - We discussed common units of measurements and each person calculated the width of their hand in cm and the length of their stride (step) in cm. You have to know these on a test!

Thurs 1/18 - Made 10-meter tape measures out of string. Dyed alternating 1-meter sections dark with walnut juice.

Fri 1/19 - Measurement day. Each student had to measure with home-made tape and by pacing

Mon 1/22 - We tried to use the spud gun for distance and velocity determination, but there were problems

Tues 1/23 - Reviewed the web page on measurements. Shot the potato gun and measured the distance by pacing. Jack Dunn's 92.2 meters was closest to the actual distance of  94.4 meters.

Wed 1/24 -Making stone tools with Jim Hamilton

Thurs 1/25 - Work on stone tools

Fri  1/26 - Continue work on stone tools

Mon 1/29 - On the practice field. Makeup measurement project. Measure velocity of bowling balls

Tues 1/30 - Begin FIRE project. Lecture over composition of matter and combustion equations

Wed 1/31 - Begin watching the "Family Version" (edited by me) of Quest for Fire. Practice drill method of fire starting.

Thurs 2/1 - Quest for Fire 30 min. Continue fire method in the lab.

Fri 2/2 -  Complete Quest for Fire. Students begin to complete their fire project.

Mon & Tues - Flu Days, no school

Wed 2/7- I got the milk and cream so we pasteurized a gallon of each and started the Butter project. We'll let the cream sour until Friday. Started Potash project by loading 2-Liter bottles with ashes and water. We'll let them sit.

Thurs 2/8 - Worked on the Fire Project and let everyone have a chance to get it finished. We'll move on now.

Fri 2/9 - Churn butter as a group. Individuals finished their butter project

Mon 2/13 - Begin work on our boomerangs!!

Tues 2/14 - Egg in a jar. Finish boomerangs. Paint them if you have time. Set out evaporationcups for the Potash project

Wed 2/15 - Flew boomerangs

Thurs 2/16 - Began fiber/spinning project

Fri 2/17 -  Interim grades given out. Test over projects to date.

Tues 2/20 - Introduction to fibers and spinning

Wed 2/21 - Lit the pickle. Spinning yarn

Thurs 2/22 - Spun yarn. Some finished with their 2-ply

Fri 2/23 - Measured potash pH. Reviewed a possible experiment and hypothesis testing. Spun 20 min.

Mon 2/26 - Worked on yarn and potash some more. Calculated specific gravity for potash

Tues 2/27 -Paiget's cognitive development and Kohlberg's moral development - what they are and how they apply to learning in this class.

Wed 2/28 - Put spinning to rest. I'm demonstrating using the sumac and a mordant to dye our wool.

Thurs & Fri - Staff Training - No students

Mon Mar 5 - Video "The Life of Pasteur"

Tues Mar 6 - Making lye soap

Wed Mar 7 - Binary numbers and knotted yarn

Thurs Mar 8 - Dye yarn. Begin calories in food. Demo with the peanut.

Fri Mar 9 - Students calculate calories in a peanut.

Mon Mar 12 - Make name necklaces using "Binary Beads".

Tues Mar 13 - Complete necklaces and begin Knots - square knot and fisherman's

Wed Mar 14 -Figure-8 family - basic, traced, on a bight, and directional

Thurs Mar 15 - Clove hitch, timber, rolling hitch

Fri Mar 16 - Basic bowline and bowline around waist. Introduce prussik knot.

Mon Mar 19 -Simple machine: pulley.  Z-drag using rolling hitch, directional figure 8,  & prussik. 3-1 mechanical advantage. Made a tigthrope walk.

Tue Mar 20 - Finish knot and practice test.Center of Gravity. Trilithion & bird.

Wed Mar 21 - Knot Test. Tensile strength tests

Thurs Mar 22 - Lashings

Fri Mar 23 - Lashings and preparation for bridge building after Spring Break.

SPRING BREAK

Mon Apr 2 - Brokern day due to registration. Covered forces as vectors and advantages of 45 degree angles.

Tues Apr 3 - Begin construction of towers.

Wed Apr 4 - Continue tower work

Thurs Apr 5 - Work on Towers

Fri Apr 6 - Complete and test the towers.

Mon Apr 9 - Video on Rainbow Bridges. Begin construction using natural materials.

Tues Apr 10 - Bridge construction
